The Future of Farming: Drones, Smart Breeding and Genome Editing

Agriculturalists worldwide face the challenge of feeding an increasing population on current farmlands. Prof Dave Berger will discuss how we will feed the world using the internet, drones and “Big-data” among others.

DAVE BERGER

Dave Berger is a Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Pretoria. He leads the research group “Molecular Plant-Pathogen Interactions” (MPPI) in the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI).  His research is also affiliated with the Genomics Research Institute at UP. His lab employs a range of approaches from genomics to field trials to better understand grey leaf spot (GLS) disease, a global threat to maize production.  GLS is caused by a fungus that infects maize leaves under humid conditions and can reach epidemic proportions in countries of sub-Saharan Africa from Kenya to South Africa.
