Meet the world’s first graffiti artists and ‘rock stars’ at Sci-Bono
If you haven’t yet hopped in a time machine for a thrill-packed trip back to humankind’s early roots at the Wonders of Rock Art: Lascaux Cave and Africa exhibition, there’s no time like the present to step into the past.
Now, adults can experience all the magic and wonder of our ancient origins for just R100, with under-18s paying R70. In addition to a fascinating guided tour of the exhibition, your ticket gives you access to all the other fantastic Sci-Bono exhibits as well.
Explore rock paintings in a life-sized replica of France’s world-famous Lascaux cave. Get a glimpse of the cave’s Stone Age mysteries and masterpieces that were hidden for 17 000 years before being unearthed in 1940 by four curious boys and their equally curious pet dog.
The Lascaux International Exhibition features fascinating videos, interactive terminals, digital projections and scale models. See ancient symbols that bring to mind today’s “graffiti tags” - except they’re on cave walls, not on bridges and street signs! Come face to face with lifelike models of the Cro-Magnon humans who may have inhabited this “Sistine Chapel of history”.
Mix pigment, just like early humans did, and create your own prehistoric rock art “masterpiece” when visiting the companion The Dawn of Art exhibition, which delves into Africa’s own ancient art and artefacts. Travel back 100 000 years to the dawn of creativity and see how the very first artworks and painting toolkits were created right here in South Africa.
